Samet Nangshe Viewpoint: What to Expect
In Phang Nga province, there are two locations where you can enjoy the iconic panoramic views of Phang Nga Bay. One is the Samet Nangshe Viewpoint, and the other is the Samet Nangshe Boutique Hotel, which offers several viewing platforms at different heights along the hillside.
Most photos in this guide were taken from the boutique hotel, but the scenery is nearly identical at both locations. The view is absolutely breathtaking—dozens of limestone islands scattered across the bay, with one massive karst formation rising dramatically above the rest. The landscape feels almost unreal, like something straight out of a fantasy movie.
Drone Photography
Drones are permitted at the viewpoint, making it possible to capture stunning aerial shots of Phang Nga Bay. Drone use is also allowed at the boutique hotel, although guests are asked to fly from the parking area to avoid disturbing others, which is completely reasonable.
Reaching the Viewpoint
After arriving and parking, you’ll need to make your way uphill to the viewpoint.
The viewpoint sits atop a steep 800-meter hill. Visitors can either:
- Take a 4Ă—4 shuttle truck, or
- Hike up in about 15–20 minutes if you’re reasonably fit and want to save some money
Private vehicles aren’t allowed to drive up the hill, so these are the only options. For sunrise visits—especially when it’s still dark—the shuttle is strongly recommended.
At the top, you’ll find a small café along with a few tourist-friendly photo spots, including swings and bird-nest props that are especially popular with families and kids.
There are also basic bungalows available for rent at around 700 Baht (~$20 USD) per night, as well as camping options for about 200 Baht. Given the growing popularity of Samet Nangshe, prices are likely to increase in the future.
Samet Nangshe Boutique Hotel Viewpoints
If you visit the Samet Nangshe Boutique Hotel, access is similar—you can either hike up or take a shuttle. The hotel features multiple viewing areas, but in our experience, the Bay View Café offers the very best vantage point, as it’s the highest spot on the property.
After sunrise, you can relax at the café with food or drinks while taking in the scenery. The view is so impressive that we felt we could easily spend days there just unwinding and photographing the landscape.
Somewhere in the distance lies James Bond Island, one of Thailand’s most famous landmarks. While it isn’t visible from the viewpoint, it’s easy to visit on a day trip, and the boutique hotel can help arrange that excursion.

Best Time to Visit: Sunrise Is Unbeatable
The best time to visit Samet Nangshe Viewpoint is sunrise—it’s truly spectacular.
Sunrise in Phang Nga typically occurs between 6:00 and 6:45 AM, depending on the season. Be sure to arrive 30–45 minutes early to catch the first hints of color in the sky.
What makes this place special is that the sun rises directly over the limestone islands, creating one of the most dramatic sunrise scenes you’ll ever see. It’s easily among the most beautiful sunrise viewpoints in the world.
Late afternoon and early evening are also great times for photos, as the rocks are well lit and the sun sits behind you. The worst lighting conditions are late morning to midday, when the bay becomes backlit and the sunlight is harsh.
Despite its beauty, the viewpoint wasn’t overly crowded during our visit, and most people left shortly after sunrise. Even as it becomes more popular, the large viewing area should help prevent it from feeling too congested.
How to Get to Samet Nangshe from Phuket
Samet Nangshe is located in Phang Nga province, about 45 kilometers northeast of Phuket International Airport (HKT).
You can reach it by car, motorbike, taxi, or tour, though there’s currently no public bus option.

From Phuket, drive via Route 4031, cross the Sarasin Bridge, turn onto Highway 1004, and continue until you see signs for Samet Nangshe Viewpoint.
Approximate travel times:
- 1 hour from Phuket Airport
- 1.5 hours from Patong Beach or Old Phuket Town
- 2 hours from Kata or Karon Beach
There’s ample parking available at both the viewpoint and the boutique hotel.
By Taxi or Private Driver
If you’re not comfortable driving in Thailand, hiring a taxi or private driver is the safest and easiest option. Most Phuket hotels can arrange transportation.
We booked a driver directly through the boutique hotel, and the experience was smooth and comfortable. Credit card payment was accepted, which was very convenient.
Approximate prices:
- 1,800 Baht (~$50 USD) from Old Phuket Town
- 1,200 Baht (~$33 USD) from Phuket Airport
If you’re not staying overnight, you can ask your driver to wait while you explore and take photos.
By Tour
Another convenient option is joining a guided tour. Some tours from Phuket include Samet Nangshe Viewpoint plus Cheow Lan Lake in Khao Sok National Park, making it a great value if you want to see more of southern Thailand in one day.
Where to Stay: Samet Nangshe Boutique Hotel
For the ultimate experience, staying at Samet Nangshe Boutique Hotel is highly recommended. We spent two nights there during the rainy season and absolutely loved it.
While the hotel is on the pricier side, every part of the property offers stunning views of Phang Nga Bay and sunrise. Facilities include:
- A public infinity pool
- Luxury rooms with private pools or bathtubs overlooking the bay
We stayed in a Deluxe King room, which didn’t have a direct bay view, but the sunrise was just steps away outside our door. Most of the photos in this guide were taken from the nearby Bay View Café, which is only a short walk uphill.
Rooms are clean, comfortable, and equipped with reliable WiFi. But the real highlight of staying here is the chance to fully immerse yourself in one of Thailand’s most extraordinary landscapes.
